Kappa Komainu at Yoriki Shrine in Shinagawa
Normally Komainu (pair of stone guardian lion-dogs) are placed in front of
Japanese Shinto shrines. Since Yoriki Shrine was built to honour the
goddess of the Sea, this Shrine's Komainu have Kappa heads. Very rare.
Kappa (sea creatures believed to live in underwater) have water bowls on their heads.
Folks in Shinagawa used to use these Kappa heads as candle holders to emit light
for fishermen on waterways.
